Good Morning Holy Spirit Pt 3
Today, we dive deep into understanding the Holy Spirit and the often misunderstood gift of tongues. This message aims to clear up misconceptions and provide a biblical perspective on this vital aspect of our faith.
Many people can easily grasp the concept of a Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, but the Holy Spirit often remains a mystery. The Holy Spirit is not a bird or a cloud with an eyeball; He is a person with a personality who lives within us. Jesus left the Holy Spirit to be with us, and our faith cannot function without Him.
Jesus was completely dependent on the Holy Spirit for His conception, teaching, and empowerment. He did not perform any miracles until He was baptized with the Spirit. If Jesus needed the Holy Spirit, why would we try to live without Him?
One of the most misunderstood topics about the Holy Spirit is the gift of tongues. Many people wonder if it was only for biblical times or if it is still relevant today. Let's explore what the Bible says about it.
Jesus Endorsed It
Jesus predicted and prioritized the gift of tongues. In Mark 16:17, He said, "These miraculous signs will accompany those who believe... they will speak in new languages." Before the disciples could begin their ministry, Jesus instructed them to wait for the Holy Spirit to empower them (Acts 2:1-4).
It's Available to Everyone
On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit was poured out on all people, regardless of nationality, gender, or economic status (Acts 2:17-18). Paul also emphasized that he wished everyone could speak in tongues (1 Corinthians 14:5).
The Church Was Founded on It
The early church spoke in tongues from its inception (Acts 2:41). This practice continued throughout the New Testament and has persisted through every century to the present day. Today, there are 670 million Spirit-filled believers, and this number is expected to reach 1 billion by 2050.
Paul reveals that there are different categories of tongues, each with a unique place in the church:
A Sign to Unbelievers
Speaking in tongues can be a sign to unbelievers, as it allows the Holy Spirit to transcend our intellect and communicate directly with them (1 Corinthians 14:22) in a language they can understand, even if the speaker does not know that language.
To Strengthen the Church
Public displays of tongues, accompanied by interpretation, serve to build up the church (1 Corinthians 12:10). It acts as a form of prophecy, a direct message from God to the listeners.
Personal Prayer
Praying in tongues during personal prayer time strengthens and builds up our personal faith (1 Corinthians 14:4). It allows us to communicate directly with God, especially when we don't know what to pray for (Romans 8:26-27).
The Enemy Fights Against It
The enemy opposes the gift of tongues because it is a powerful weapon in spiritual warfare. Praying in the Spirit is an essential part of the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18). Note that following the description of the armor of God, verse 18 states “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.” It allows us to communicate securely with God, preventing the enemy from intercepting our prayers and is essential in spiritual warfare.
Seek a deeper relationship with the Holy Spirit. Ask God to reveal more of His Spirit to you and to help you understand and embrace the gift of tongues. Remember, the Holy Spirit is here to guide, empower, and build you up in your faith.
May you experience the fullness of the Holy Spirit in your life and see the incredible impact it can have on your faith journey.
