Many believers accept Jesus but feel like something is still missing. There is a reason for that. The salvation experience is just the beginning. Understanding the baptism of the Holy Spirit can change the way you pray, the way you fight spiritual battles, and the way you live out your faith every single day.

A French philosopher once said, "We are not human beings having a spiritual experience. We are spiritual beings having a human experience." This distinction matters enormously when it comes to understanding the Holy Spirit. If you approach God with only an earthly mindset, spiritual things will not make sense. But when you recognize that you are a spiritual being passing through this world, everything shifts.

The Bible says that when you give your life to Jesus Christ, you become a citizen of heaven. This earth is a journey. The only thing you take with you is people. That is why reaching others matters so much.

Jesus did not just call His followers to gather with each other. He sent them out. He called them ambassadors with a ministry of reconciliation, to take what is out of order and put it back in order. This is the same mandate He carried.

But He did not send them out empty-handed. Before He commissioned them, He told them to wait. "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth" (Acts 1:8). He was essentially saying: you cannot do this on your own strength. You need the power of the Holy Spirit to fulfill what I am calling you to do.

"When the day of Pentecost arrived, they [the disciples] were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2:1-4). Notice the word "all." The baptism of the Holy Spirit is not reserved for a select few. It is for every believer who desires it and receives it by faith.

The question is, “Did you already receive the Holy Spirit when you got saved?” In one sense, yes. In another sense, there is more available to you. When you accept Jesus, you receive the Holy Spirit as a seal. That is what connects all believers together as family. But the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a second, deeper experience of being filled and empowered.

We see this clearly in Acts chapter 8, when Peter and John traveled to Samaria to pray for believers who had already accepted the word of God but had not yet received the Holy Spirit.

We also see it in Acts 19, when Paul encountered disciples in Ephesus: "He said to them, 'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?' And they said, 'No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit" (Acts 19:2). Paul laid hands on them, and the Holy Spirit came upon them. They began speaking in tongues and prophesying boldly.

Theologian Wayne Grudem noted that in Ephesians 5:18, Paul used a present tense imperative verb that could be translated, "be continually filled with the Holy Spirit." This is not a one-time event. It is something that should be happening repeatedly in the life of every believer.

There is one common question people ask, “Do I have to speak in tongues to be baptized in the Holy Spirit?” There are actually two distinct expressions of tongues in Scripture, and understanding the difference matters.

• • Prophetic tongues are a spiritual gift used in a gathered setting, where someone speaks in tongues and another person interprets it for the edification of the whole body. This is the gift of tongues.

  • Personal prayer language is something intimate and personal between you and God. It is not for public interpretation. It is for building yourself up spiritually. "For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands Him, but He utters mysteries in the Spirit... The one who speaks in a tongue builds himself up" (1 Corinthians 14:2-4).

Paul also wrote, "I want you all to speak in tongues." His desire was that every believer would have access to their prayer language. To say that some people simply cannot have any experience with tongues does not follow the logic of Scripture.

Here is a thought that might stretch you. When you pray in the Holy Spirit, you are not just praying for yourself. The Holy Spirit searches the deep things of God on your behalf and on behalf of the entire body of Christ.

God looks throughout the whole earth for those who will come into agreement with what He has said, is saying, and wants to say. Sometimes praying in tongues may be the Holy Spirit interceding through you for a brother or sister on the other side of the world who is in need.

The kingdom of God advances when believers pray. No prayer means no change. Agreement is the platform by which everything shifts and when we pray in agreement with God through our prayer language or through declaration of His word, we are praying effectively.

How do you receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit? "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you" (Matthew 7:7). It is that simple. The baptism of the Holy Spirit is a free gift received by faith, just like salvation. You do not earn it. You receive it. 

There are a few things to consider before you ask:

• You must be a believer in Jesus Christ.

• Unforgiveness and unrepentant sin can bottleneck your prayers from being heard. Repent, receive forgiveness, and move forward.

• God will never override your will. The baptism of the Holy Spirit requires surrender. It is one of the most vulnerable, yielding things a believer can do.

When you yield your will to God and pray in the Spirit, your mind may feel like it does not understand what is happening. That is okay. Your Spirit is praying even when your mind cannot keep up. That is the point.

Set aside intentional time to ask God for a fresh filling of the Holy Spirit. Whether you have never received your prayer language or you have simply let the well run dry, come back to that place of surrender. Yield your will, ask in faith, and begin to pray. Do not wait until you feel ready. Step out in faith the same way you did when you first believed.

God has not left you defenseless. He has given you authority, power, and a prayer language through the baptism of the Holy Spirit to advance His kingdom.
