Made for Mondays Pt 2

Most of us dread Mondays and live for Fridays. Studies show that 82% of people don't like their jobs, spending 40% of their lives doing work they don't enjoy. But God has a greater plan for us. When we understand our calling and purpose, Mondays become opportunities rather than obstacles.

Today is about how to find God’s favor in unfavorable places. Favor isn't about having bigger houses, better cars, or more possessions. Favor is when there's a God factor on your efforts - when your natural abilities plus God's supernatural touch create extraordinary results.

The blessing that comes in your life makes you an example, not so you get credit, but so people become curious. When God blesses you, it points people to Him. Your blessing becomes a blessing for others.

Daniel's story provides the perfect illustration of how God's favor works in the workplace. As a captive in Babylon, Daniel faced a hostile work environment where he didn't know the language, customs, or culture. Yet he rose to become second in command of the entire kingdom.

When Daniel and his friends refused to eat food dedicated to idols, choosing instead to honor God, something remarkable happened. "God gave these four men an unusual aptitude for understanding every aspect of literature and wisdom... whenever the king consulted them in any matter requiring wisdom and balanced judgment, he found them 10 times more capable than anybody else in the kingdom" (Daniel 1:17, 20).

There are four things favor provides:

  1. Strategic Plans: Daniel operated in divine understanding. When kings didn't know what to do, Daniel had solutions. God wants to give you clear direction for growing your accounts, expanding your territory, and mapping out your dreams.

  2. Significant Partnerships: Despite having no pedigree or experience, God connected Daniel to the right people at the right time. Favor makes you attractive to partners whose strengths cover your weaknesses. It doesn't take a lot of people liking you - just the right people.

  3. Sovereign Protection: Even when Daniel was thrown into the lion's den, God protected him. Favor doesn't help you escape difficulties, but it ensures difficulties won't consume you. "Favor will surround you like a shield" (Psalm 5:12).

  4. Supernatural Provision: Daniel remained relevant for 74 years, serving four different royal administrations. No matter what the need was, God provided. One moment of God's favor can accomplish more than a thousand years of hard work.

Including God in your decisions attracts God’s favor. God doesn't want to be distant from the 100,000 hours you'll spend at work during your lifetime. He wants to hear your frustrations, discuss your dreams, and inform your decisions.

When making major decisions, Daniel consistently did three things:

  • Created space to ask God for guidance

  • Waited until he sensed God's peace before acting

  • Listened for God's prompts and followed them

God's understanding is beyond comprehension. He knows the past, present, and future. Nothing has ever taken Him by surprise. When you include Him in your decisions, you gain access to His inexhaustible intellect.

Another attitude and behavior is to treat others with favor. "Don't let mercy and kindness and truth leave you. Instead, let these qualities define you... and you will find favor and high esteem in the sight of God and man" (Proverbs 3:3-4).

Work environments can bring out the worst in us, but frustration is no excuse for mistreating people. Here are three common ways we mistreat others at work:

  • Gossip: This is how we hurt others to help ourselves. Instead, "do not use harmful words, but only helpful words, the kind that build up and provide what is needed" (Ephesians 4:29). Fill your mouth with encouraging words and there'll be no room for hurtful ones.

  • Unhealthy Ego: Living for yourself will never bring God's favor. The antidote is generosity - sharing your connections, opening doors for others, and recommending people for opportunities. If you open doors for others, God will open doors for you.

  • Extending No Grace: We often expect perfection and let people know when they fall short. Remember, you don't have to be hard on everyone - they're already hard enough on themselves. People around you are hurting and desperate for grace.

Another quality is excellence. Favor never finds people who do things halfway. "Daniel became distinguished among all the other high officials because an excellent spirit was in him" (Daniel 6:3). Excellence is not common - it flows from your spirit. Excellence is doing the best you can with what you've got. It's going the extra mile where there's less traffic and competition.

Remember, there's always someone above watching your work. When you cut corners or slack off, you may fool your boss or coworkers, but God sees everything. Give your best for the One who gave His best for you.

This week, challenge yourself to recognize God's favor in the small things. When you get a good parking spot, when someone lets you go ahead in line, when an opportunity presents itself unexpectedly - thank God for His favor. Whatever you recognize, you become thankful for, and whatever you're thankful for increases in your life.

Start including God in your work decisions, treat people with kindness and generosity, and commit to excellence in everything you do. When your work starts honoring God, He will honor your work with His favor.
