The Principal Thing Part II
In a world filled with confusion, tragedy, and uncertainty, we need something solid to stand on. Recent events in our nation remind us that we desperately need wisdom to navigate these challenging times. But wisdom isn't just for national crises; it's essential for our marriages, families, finances, and everyday decisions.
Why Is Wisdom So Important? Wisdom is the principal thing in life. It's not just good advice or human intellect—it's having God's perspective and heart for every situation. Last week, we discovered that wisdom is the master key that unlocks everything else we need. When Solomon asked for wisdom, God gave him everything else too. But without wisdom as our foundation, everything else we build will eventually crumble.
Proverbs 24:3 tells us: "Through skillful and godly wisdom is a house built, and by understanding it is established on a solid foundation." Just like building a physical house requires inspection and approval of the foundation before construction can continue, godly wisdom is the foundation of our lives—and for good reason:
-
For safety - God loves us too much to propel us forward without the safety wisdom provides.
-
For structure - The strength of your foundation determines how high you can build.
Many people have big dreams but a faulty foundation. Their character can't support the level of blessing they want. Their integrity can't support the influence they desire. If you want to live a God-sized life, you need a God-approved foundation.
According to Jesus in Matthew 7:24, the only foundation is His Word. The Bible is the bedrock for all God's blessings in our lives. Yet many people struggle with the Bible. Some think it's optional. Others find it confusing or question its reliability. According to Gallup Polls, only 20% of Americans believe the Bible is the literal word of God.
This matters tremendously because if God's Word isn't trustworthy, then neither is God. Here are four facts that prove the Bible is a trustworthy foundation:
1. The Bible is historically accurate.
The Bible isn't just theologically correct—it's the recorded history of real people and places. Its accuracy has been preserved through meticulous copying methods.
-
The Old Testament scribes followed strict rules for copying scrolls very close to the accuracy of copy and paste that we do today digitally.
-
Today, translators have over 66,000 manuscripts verifying the Bible's content.
-
When comparing manuscripts 1,000 years apart, there's less than 5% difference (mostly spelling.
Archaeological discoveries consistently confirm biblical accounts. Over 26,000 archaeological digs have found nothing contradicting Scripture. Even scientific facts stated in the Bible—like the Earth being spherical (Isaiah 40:22) and suspended in space (Job 26:7)—were written thousands of years before science confirmed them.
2. The Bible is prophetically accurate.
Nearly 28% of the Bible consists of prophecy—detailed predictions about specific people, nations, and events made hundreds of years before they occurred. For example:
-
Isaiah predicted Judah's Babylonian captivity 100 years before it happened
-
He predicted Babylon's fall 150 years before it occurred
-
He even named King Cyrus as the one who would allow Israel to return home—150 years before Cyrus was born
The Bible contains over 2,500 prophecies, with more than 2,100 already fulfilled with complete accuracy. No other religious text contains specific prophecies that can be independently verified.
Jesus himself fulfilled over 300 Old Testament prophecies about the Messiah—prophecies written up to 400 years before His birth.
3. The Bible is thematically unified.
From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible tells one cohesive story; God created us for relationship with Him, our sin broke that relationship, and Jesus redeemed us to restore that connection.
What makes this remarkable is that the Bible was written:
-
Over 1,500 years
-
By 40 different authors
-
In 13 countries across 3 continents
-
In 3 different languages
-
By people from all walks of life—kings, prisoners, shepherds, doctors, sailors
Despite this diversity, the Bible maintains perfect thematic harmony because, as 2 Peter 1:20-21 explains, "no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet's own understanding... those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God."
4. The Bible has transforming power.
Perhaps the most compelling evidence of the Bible's trustworthiness is its power to transform lives. I personally have seen:
-
Addicts have found freedom
-
Abusive men have become godly husbands who lovingly lead their home well
-
Insecure women have discovered confidence and become strong women of God
-
Selfish people have become generous and caring
The Bible isn't just verified by science and history—it has a supernatural quality that renovates the human heart and mind.
As Jesus said in John 5:39: "You search the Scriptures because you think they give you eternal life, but the Scriptures point to me." When we read the Bible, we release the power of Jesus in our lives.
Building your life on the foundation of wisdom—God's Word—is not just a good idea; it's essential for navigating today's challenges. Make a commitment to read the Bible daily, even if it's just a few verses. Download a Bible app if that helps you stay consistent. Ask: "What does God's wisdom say about this?" rather than just following your feelings or others' opinions.
Remember, "On Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand." When you build your life on the foundation of God's wisdom, you'll have the stability to weather any storm and the strength to reach new heights.
